Our Puppy Rearing Philosophy and Puppy Selection Protocol

Puppies whelped and raised at Alvarado Farm Kennels, LLC are born and delivered in our home. They are handled daily beginning from the minute they are birthed until they leave for their new homes. Our puppies are raised in a family-oriented and enriched environment. Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Puppy Culture protocols are incorporated into each pups’ daily routine. This critical early socialization is incorporated to create stable and well-adjusted adult dogs. Puppies will be exposed to a busy family to include small children, teenagers, and adults as well as adult dogs. Puppies will be exposed to a variety of auditory and environmental stimuli to include: music, television, vacuum, multiple surfaces and textures, toys with unique and varying form, function and purpose. Pups may also be exposed to wings and live birds whenever possible.

Within 72 hours of puppy birth date, we will contact everyone on the reserved list to indicate how many pups were born, how many males and how many females. As the pups grow, we will provide frequent, small, age appropriate challenges to develop their resilience and problem solving skills. Puppies will not be completely crate trained; however, they will have been exposed to a kennel from 4-5 weeks on to assist in crate training transition for you and your pup.

If you have a deposit down on a puppy, we like to wait until the pup is a minimum of four weeks old prior to picking out your puppy. We do this because we spend a substantial amount of time and effort raising each litter, and prior to placement with you, no one will come to know each puppy more closely than us. Our direct familiarity with the entire litter enables us to provide the best possible guidance in matching up puppies with their new families. In puppy evaluations, we make sure to consider all aspects of personality, conformation, temperament, drive and activity level. When we suggest a particular puppy for you, rest assured that we have taken into account what we have learned about your needs and expectations. This will translate into you bringing home a puppy that will thrive in your care and mesh best with your family.

All pups are sold on limited/restricted registration, or a co-ownership if they are to be a show/titled/breeding dog. Typically, co-ownership will be terminated when the primary owner and Alvarado Farm Kennels have mutually agreed that the dog has completed breeding and has been altered.

Puppy pick-up is done at our home in San Antonio, Texas. We do not ship puppies by any cargo means (air, bus or otherwise). Depending on your location and situation, delivery may be arranged at an extra cost, or you may fly to us to retrieve your puppy. The latter is often the most economical option.

Our dogs love being a member of your family whether they are a hunting companion, home companion or a combination of both. They thrive on spending time with you doing whatever you enjoy. They need structure, rules and boundaries. We have several Professional Dog Trainers to recommend when the time comes. If at any time you have questions or concerns we are happy to help you. We hope to continue to get updates from you throughout your pups’ lifetime.

Application Process

Please take the time to review our entire website and familiarize yourself with the dates we have projected for litter plans and how this meshes with your family’s needs. Next, please fill out the application below with as much detail as possible. There are no right or wrong answers. We contact everyone who applies.

Please keep in mind that our waitlist for a puppy can fill up well in advance of puppies being born. We will give you our best estimate for when we expect pups to be born. Puppies are selected after 4 weeks of age in the order your deposit is placed. We take deposits for male and female pups separately. For example, first pick male, second pick male …. As well as first pick female, second pick female …. You will select your puppy in the order your deposit was placed. If you would like to move forward to getting a puppy from us we will send you a copy of our contract for review. If this is a suitable agreement for you, please send us a message confirming you would like to be added to the list.

Next, we will schedule a video call or an in-person meeting if you are local. We will talk through your application, our contract, your expectations and goals for a puppy as well as cover any questions or concerns that either side has. Once you reserve a puppy by placing a deposit, we are potentially turning away other puppy owners. There will be no hard feeling if you decide you need to make other arrangements, please let us know so that we may open up your spot as soon as possible.
